The Facts:
The Positives:
* Luffy’s using a pretty easygoing guy but when he feels that an injustice has been done or that someone is threatening or harming his friends or someone he’s taken a liking to, he gets pretty pissed. That’s what we have here: A pissed off Luffy! The faceplate can attach to either standard Luffy and looks great. I love him baring his teeth!
* Sometime Luffy wears his straw hat hanging around his neck by a string. Nami put that on their for him so he doesn’t lose his hat. Like Indiana Jones, Luffy will always go back for his hat. It’s nice to have another way to display Luffy! Just pop the head off and if fits around his neck. Easy stuff. This one works with either Luffy figure, too.
* Now we’ve got a set of gummy arms for Luffy so you can show off his Devil Fruit powers. His rubbery arms are bendy. To attach them you remove the standard Romance Dawn Luffy’s arms at the biceps and then slide the shoulder cover off. These slip right onto the shoulder peg. Since the Raid on Onigashima Luffy has sleeves, these won’t work on him.
* The arms are bendable though the hands themselves are not. They’re actually standard hands, so you can remove them and place any other hands from the base figure on them, giving you more display options.
* Luffy also has some extended legs! These work with both the Romance Dawn Luffy and the Raid on Onigashima Luffy. The standard legs can easily be popped out of the sockets inside Luffy’s shorts and these fit right inside.
* Luffy’s a rubber man, so you can stretch these legs all around., Have him deliver powerful kicks, jump great distances, or wrap up his foes like a pretzel.
* Like on the standard figures, these stretchy legs have the really cool mid-foot hinge or toe hinge that keeps the sandals looking natural. It really does work like a sandal with Luffy’s foot bending while his sandal stays flat. It’s an impressive bit of design.
* The included stand is pretty nice. It’s very durable and of a much higher quality than many similar stands you’ll fine. There are three holes in the base where the articulated arm can go and plenty of swivels and hinge joints on the arm. I do wish Bandai would include these with all of the S.H. Figuarts releases (as the figures don’t have peg holes in their feet), though.
* There’s a figure clip that fits on the articulated arm, allowing you to pose Luffy in midair or using his stretchy legs. It’s quite strong, so you shouldn’t have to worry about it drooping on you. Luffy looks great in multiple leaping poses since he’s such a dynamic character.
* Gum-Gum Gatling! The biggest draw for this set is the Gum-Gum Gatling effect that attached to the arm of the stand. Just pop the clip off and the white, smoky piece attaches on. There are seven additional arms to replicate how Luffy can throw out a flurry of punches, moving so fast that it looks like he has more than 2 arms. It’s a really fun effect and Bandai did a neat job in executing it. The seven arms for the Gum-Gum Gatling aren’t actual arms (they don’t attach to Luffy) and they’re not bendy, but they do have a translucent back, making them look like they’re appearing midair.
* The fists look pretty cool. You definitely don’t want to be on the end of these if you’ve pissed Luffy off! They look great and match the look of the base figure nicely, creating a fun and convincing effect.
If you’re a fan of One Piece and have the S.H. Figuarts Romance Dawn version of Luffy, the Gum-Gum Option Parts Set is a cool extra. It actually costs a bit more than the figure itself but there are a lot of additional options here that really fill out the figure. The Gum-Gum Gatling effect is a neat display piece and the stand, stretchy limbs, new hat, and extra faceplate are all quite good. Depending on whether you’re importing this or not, the price can vary a bit, but for an import piece this can be had for a good price. It’s a Great set that makes the Monkey D. Luffy figure all the more fun. Heck, if you have both Luffy figures, you can spread the pieces between the figures for multiple cool effects.
