Hiroki Totoki, president of Sony Group, commented that the company has no interest in acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery, which last week put itself up for sale after receiving what it described as “unsolicited proposals”.
Totoki says Sony’s priority is to expand its presence in the global anime market, without any intention of joining all or part of the Warner Bros. business to Sony Pictures, partly because of the scale of the company it wants to buy, but also because it is not looking for acquisitions in Hollywood.
In his conversation with Japan’s Nikkei, Totoki said that combining film studios would result in limited benefits, as scale alone does not guarantee them greater profit. For Sony, the main target for economic growth has been identified: anime.
With films like Demon Slayer: The Infinite Castle and Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Pray Arc dominating in theaters around the world, Sony is especially focused on Japanese animation as an important vehicle for growth.
Over the past few years and months, Sony has been forming strategic alliances in Japan to expand its presence in anime production, one of its main focuses, in which Warner Bros. Discovery wasn’t going to help her.
