The Incredible Shrinking 31 Days of Toy Terror: Male Alien (They Live) from Universal Horror Classics Tiny Mights by CultureFly

Ready for another true minifigure for The Incredible Shrinking 31 Days of Toy Terror? Then let’s check out another of CultureFly’s Universal Horror Classics Tiny Mights from John Carpenter’s 1988 classic They Live: The Male Alien. Yes, one of the male versions of the aliens or ghouls who have secretly invaded the earth this time. I reviewed the Female Alien and John Nada not long ago, so look back and check out those reviews for more details. Today I’m interested in talking a bit about how these are labeled as Universal Horror Classics. When I think of Universal horror classics, I think of the films of Universal during the silent period and from 1931 to 1960, but this line is based on films from the 1970s through the late 90s. Interesting. The classic Universal films did eventually lead to elements of a shared universe at times, though they also shared many of the same cast and crew members giving them a more cohesive feel. Do the post 1960s films have the same connective tissue as those classics, though? Apparently CultureFly and someone at Universal Pictures does. Let’s take a closer look at this guy after the break…

The Facts:

The Positives:

* Like the Female Alien, this guy is posed like he’s using his wrist communicator/ teleportation device to report in that John Nada has discovered the alien threat. Unlike the Female Alien (and most of the women in this series of figures), the Male Alien is a bit beefy, capturing the classic M.U.S.C.L.E. proportions that make these guys so cool. Multiple colorways of each figure can be found but I stumbled upon pink for this guy (true pink, bot classic M.U.S.C.L.E. pink).

* This guy’s pretty basic as he’s just wearing a suit with a pretty standard haircut. His face is very noticeable not human, though, and there is a lot of detail on his skull-like visage. There’s even some unusual veiny details on his eyeballs that’s noticeable. Heck, his teeth are even individually defined. Not bad for a figure that’s smaller than my thumb.

This may not be the most exciting minifigure from this set but he’s not bad at all. In fact, he gets a solid Good rating from me. He’s pretty detailed and accurate and has the fun M.U.S.C.L.E. proportions. Get a couple of each of the aliens and pose them around Nada and you’ve got a neat display. As of the beginning of October I still hadn’t found any more of these yet, so I’m still on the lookout for at least the Kessler Wolf, Laurie Strode, and both versions of Michael Myers. Maybe I’ll get a trick instead of a treat and stumble upon them soon while out on a trip to Five Below.
