WHAT IT IS
The My Robotic Pet: Coding Chameleon from Thames & Kosmos is a STEM kit that includes parts that kids need to build their own chameleon robot that they can then code. The educational set is designed for kids ages 8 and up (with an adult to help them build) or kids ages 12 and up if they are ready to build on their own. In all, the kit takes 3-4 hours to build. Once done, kids can play with the robot in three play modes. In Coding Mode, kids use colorful action cards to program the chameleon to complete a series of movements. In Wild Mode, the chameleon will camouflage, stalk prey, and shoot its tongue out at objects. Finally, in Pet Mode, the chameleon will walk around searching for kids and react to petting.

WHY WE LOVE IT
Building the Coding Chameleon is a great activity to complete over the course of a break from school or even just on a rainy day. When kids are done building, the three different play modes ensure that kids get hours of coding and interactive play out of the chameleon without getting bored.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW
Along with all of the materials in the kit, kids need scissors, a nail file, a screwdriver, and other supplies to put the Coding Chameleon together. Also, some of the pieces in the set can be particularly fragile, so tweens need to use gentle hands when building.
