Xbox wants to end confusion in multiplatform releases

The head of Xbox Game Studios, Craig Duncan, acknowledged that the strategy of launching games outside of Xbox consoles, more specifically on PlayStation 5, has been inconsistent. In an interview with Games Radar+, Duncan explained that the team is trying to adapt better to this new path, but that it hasn’t always been easy to fit everything in.

The topic became more pertinent after the last Xbox Developer Direct, where it was confirmed that expected games like Fable will arrive on launch day on PS5, while others, like Forza Horizon 6, will appear first on Xbox and PC, and only later on the Sony console, an example of the inconsistency that Microsoft itself admits exists.

Duncan explained that this has a lot to do with development resources: when a game starts to be made, the available team and initial planning influence whether it will be released at the same time on all platforms or not. This is why there are cases where the version for PS5 or other consoles is released later, to ensure that it is not a “poorly made” or limited game.

The studio head explained that Xbox’s intention is to try to be more consistent in the future, to reduce unforeseen events and better adjust launch deadlines between platforms. The objective is simple: to get the games to as many people as possible without compromising quality on each system.

We are therefore witnessing a structural change: the days of strict exclusivity at Xbox are beginning to disappear, with the company looking to multiple platforms as a way to grow and involve more players, even if that means adjusting the way it plans its releases.
