The Facts:
Height: 4 1/8ths inches
The Positives:
* Funko has made a couple Jacob Marley POP! vinyls previously but this is the first version with a cool supernatural base that makes Marley look like he’s floating in a ghostly cloud of vapor. It’s clearly recognizable as both Deadpool and Jacob Marley at a glance, so that’s a win in the design department. Like other Marvel POP! vinyls, Deadpool is technically a bobble head (done to get around licensing issues), so he can bobble a bit on your shelf when you pick him up, but not anything that’s going to just wobble all day long.
* Deadpool is dressed like Jacob Marley, thus he’s clothed in his Victorian era finest with a 3-piece suit and a ruffled tie. While Deadpool’s costume is purple here, his outfit is done in multiple shades of pale blue and white. He’s also locked up in chains that surround his torso and cover his arms. Super spooky!
* Since he’s a ghost and ghosts are often depicted in shades of blue (as with most representations of Mr. Marley), Deadpool’s typical red mask is now… purple? Yeah, that makes sense. Red mixed with blue equals purple. Clever! He also has the traditional kerchief wrapped around his head to keep his jaw shut while he was awaiting burial, though I doubt it’s doing anything to keep the Merc with a Mouth quiet.
* Here’s a closeup of the chains. They do appear to be a separate piece of plastic over the figure (though permanently attached) and there are four large padlocks and a cashbox attached. It’s not as elaborate as some Marley figures, sure, but we’re assuming that Deadpool is just playing the role of Jacob Marley, right? Who would be his Ebenezer Scrooge? Wolverine? Cable? Weasel?
* The bubbly, ectoplasmic base is perfect for the appearance of a phantasmagorical specter! I seriously love the base here and how the ghost of Wade Marley emerges from it. There’s a color gradient that runs from his spectral robes up to the top of his jacket which really gives off a ghostly vibe. if you added a little led light effect somewhere nearby (or placed Deadpool on something that gave off a bit of light) you’d have a really neat setup.
* The color gradient is also visible from the back, as are the chains and the little extra bit of fabric on the back of Deadpool’s mask. While I’m largely convinced the whole “POP! Plus” think is just a marketing gimmick, this figure does seem a bit nicer than most, so maybe their really is some truth to the label?
If you’re the specific demographic who is a fan of Deadpool, Victorian literature, ghosts, the color purple, and being wrapped in chains, then this is the Funko POP! for you. While this certainly wouldn’t be anyone’s default Jacob Marley on their shelf, this take on the beloved Christmas character does nail Marley’s ghostly presence better than most others. This is a Great and a 1/2 POP! vinyl that really impressed me with it’s design and not just with it’s bizarre concept. If you’re looking for more Deadpool crossovers with great literary classics, you can also find Deadpool as Cthulhu, Long John Silver, and Don Quixote.
