Make Play Purposeful with Nintendo’s Parental Safety Features

The Nintendo Switch 2 has been a staple of game night for nearly one year, but some families are not familiar with Nintendo‘s best gaming feature: the parental controls!

Older gamers can ensure a safe, family-friendly Switch experience this summer by implementing parental controls. While each gaming system incorporates several safety measures, parental controls let guardians further customize their kids’ involvement. Parents can alter the platform to grow and change alongside their little ones, so players can connect with their friends and favorite Nintendo characters — no worrying necessary.

You can download the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app from the App Store or Google Play to easily adjust the safety settings on your kid’s Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2. With the app and a parent-specific PIN, parents can choose which games run on the system (based on ESRB age rating or a custom curation), receive notifications when new games are downloaded, see how long each game is played, and view a monthly summary of play activity.

Parents can also set daily playtime limits. Once the time limit is hit, an alarm will pop up on the screen and alert the gamer. If the device is in use past the limit, you’ll get a notification. If needed, parents can suspend the software and put the device into Sleep Mode.

Although online interactions are not necessary to enjoy the Nintendo Switch 2, kids can communicate with other gamers through the GameChat voice and video chat options. Caregivers can monitor this feature through the Parental Controls as well — approve friends, grant permissions for younger players to enable video, monitor session length, view chat history, or block gamers from using the feature altogether. If the gamer in your family is under 16, you’ll need to approve their GameChat usage anyway.

Parents can also manage online actions outside of GameChat. Use the In-Game Communication with Others tab in the app to restrict general communication in games and disable image sharing or viewing. Additionally, guardians can manage the user’s interactions with the Nintendo eShop and VR mode.

Gaming should be fun, friendly, and stress-free! Parents can use these features to ensure their littles are gaming safely. To learn more about the Parental Controls, visit nintendo.com.
