“The Hateful Darkness” is the penultimate episode of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, and overall, it excels at balancing its character-driven drama with high-stakes, brutal action. The episode deepens the moral complexity of its cast of characters while steadily tightening the narrative noose around Fisk, setting the stage for an explosive endgame.

Episode seven opens in stark contrast to the chaos of the previous installment, opting instead for a quiet, almost eerie calm. Wilson Fisk�the Kingpin�begins his day with a subtle but telling detail, he notices Vanessa�s missing earring. It�s a small moment, but one that immediately signals something is off beneath the surface of his carefully controlled world.
The tension escalates quickly with Karen Page now in custody. Her confrontation with Fisk is one of the episode�s most chilling scenes. When he chokes her under the guise of �restoring order,� it reinforces just how far gone he is�no longer hiding behind civility, but openly embracing brutality. Karen�s refusal to back down continues to define her strength, even in the face of overwhelming power.
The episode then pivots to Jessica Jones, who confronts Mr. Charles, adding another layer of intrigue. The revelation that Luke Cage is overseas�and that larger forces, including the Governor, are maneuvering against Fisk�gives the narrative a broader, almost geopolitical weight.
Jessica and Matt Murdock meet and piece together Fisk�s plan to assassinate the Governor, raising the stakes considerably. Cherry returns and reveals Karen�s imprisonment presents a unique obstacle: she�s being held legitimately, forcing Matt to fight within the system rather than outside it.
One of the episode�s most compelling exchanges is Matt�s interaction with Bullseye. Their uneasy alliance is layered with history, guilt, and the possibility of redemption. Matt�s willingness to extend even a sliver of forgiveness�despite everything Bullseye has done�adds emotional complexity and reinforces the show�s ongoing exploration of justice versus mercy.
Heather Glenn visits Fisk, who admits to feeling lonely. He thanks her for her work and presents her with the red earring that matches the one she had stolen previously. She apologizes, but he tells her not to, explaining that he finds impulsive behavior interesting.
We then learn Daniel has kept BB at his mother’s house for safety, which she is not happy about. She reveals to him that Fisk killed her uncle, which Daniel hesitantly accepts. Daniel warns Buck is waiting for them and they need to run. He then texts Buck an address. Daniel�s internal struggle to protect BB or save his own life is fraught with guilt and fear.
We move to the courtroom with Kirsten McDuffie leading the defense, the trial becomes more than a legal proceeding�it�s a philosophical debate about vigilantism itself. Matt�s surprise entrance as co-counsel is a standout moment, shifting the power dynamic and catching Fisk off guard. The questioning of corrupt officers begins to unravel the system Fisk has built, exposing cracks in his empire.
Action-wise, the episode delivers with a violent flurry. First there is an AVTF ambush in the courthouse parking garage. Matt is shot and his injury raises the stakes physically, while the simultaneous assassination attempt on the Governor is thwarted in a surprising twist�Bullseye fulfills his �one good deed.� Daniel then meets Buck in an abandoned apartment and tells him BB is gone. Angry, Buck responds by viciously beating him.
Perhaps the most unsettling thread, however, is Heather�s unraveling. Her interrogation of Karen quickly devolves into something deeply personal and disturbing, culminating in physical violence as she slaps Karen multiple times. The scene is uncomfortable by design, highlighting Heather�s instability and continued Muse visions.
By the episode�s final act, everything converges. Karen returns to her cell battered but unbroken. Fisk, isolated and calculating, prepares his next move. Matt, wounded and desperate, seeks solace in faith�only for a striking note with Jessica Jones� return, signaling that the fight is far from over.
And then the closing moment is as bleak as it is effective: Daniel�s execution at Buck�s hands. It�s a brutal reminder that in this world, all choices have consequences�and not everyone gets a second chance.
