World Baking Day: Baking Ideas For Kids

‘Doughnut’ worry, be happy… World Baking Day is just around the corner! This annual celebration is coming up on Sunday 17th May, creating a fabulous opportunity for a fun family bake off with the kids. Baking with kids is a wonderful way to spend quality time together, cooking delicious food for everyone to enjoy, while nourishing children’s creativity, confidence, and life skills. You ‘batter’ believe it!

What is World Baking Day?

World Baking Day is all about bringing people together through the joy of baking. It’s celebrated on the third Sunday of May every year, and is dedicated to making baking fun and accessible for people of all ages and abilities – from young beginners to skilled pâtissiers.

What can I bake with kids easily?

The easiest things to bake with kids are quick recipes that don’t require too many steps – think cupcakes, biscuits, traybakes, and no-bake treats. These recipes work because they:

  • Use basic ingredients
  • Involve lots of fun mixing & decorating
  • Give quick, rewarding results

For family baking, the key is to choose recipes that allow kids to get stuck into the fun parts, like stirring, mixing, pouring, and decorating, without too much waiting or complexity.

What skills do kids learn from baking?

There are so many skills kids can learn from baking! From practical abilities to early learning concepts, kids baking activities support the development of children’s:

  • Dexterity & coordination (pouring ingredients, mixing & decorating)
  • Maths understanding (measuring ingredients)
  • Language & vocabulary (following instructions & naming ingredients)
  • Confidence & independence (trying new things & seeing the results)
  • Patience & focus (waiting for mixtures to bake & following instructions)
  • Creativity (decorating & experimenting with flavours)
  • Sensory exploration (discovering new textures, smells & tastes)

5 Ideas For Baking With Kids

Whether you’re baking for fun, learning, or a special occasion, these easy baking ideas for kids will help make the experience more engaging, creative, and enjoyable for the whole family.

1. Create a child-friendly setup

Setting up a safe and accessible baking space will make all the difference for your junior chef! Giving youngsters their own place to stand and a child-size kids baking kit will help them feel involved and confident from the get-go. Littlens can dress the part in our Blue Chef’s Set, including an apron, oven glove, a chef’s hat, rolling pin, and pastry cutters, while our White Step Stool will give them a little lift and help them reach the worktop safely.

2. Organise a kids bake off

Turn baking into a friendly competition by hosting your own family bake off at home. You could go head-to-head decorating cupcakes, making biscuits, preparing a dessert, or inventing your own recipes! Adding a playful challenge to the mix will make baking even more exciting for kids.

Our 23-piece Young Chef’s Kids Baking Set comes with everything they’ll need to compete, including a baking tray, loaf tin, cupcake cases, an oven glove, pastry cutters, measuring spoons, a whisk, and rolling pin.

3. Bake by theme

Incorporating a theme can make baking feel extra special, particularly if you link it to your child’s favourite interest. You could create animal-shaped biscuits, dinosaur cupcakes, gingerbread bears, unicorn fudge, rainbow meringues, and more! The theme can give kids a creative direction and motivates them to experiment with colours, shapes, and designs, enriching their imagination. Pick up our Pastry Set, featuring themed pastry cutters and wooden utensils sized for small hands.

4. Mix baking with pretend play

Baking doesn’t have to stop when the oven cools down! Keep the culinary creations going with a World Baking Day role play session. Our Simply Scandi Kitchen is kitted out with a play oven, hob plates, storage cupboard, pots, pans, and utensils – or if space is limited, check out our mini Tabletop Kitchen. Pair this with our wooden Baking Cookies Set, Muffin Tray, Cake Stand, or Biscuit Box to add another layer of storytelling fun!

5. Host a mini bake sale

Once the baking is done, you could set up a mini bake sale with all profits going to charity or a local cause. This is a fantastic way to extend the activity and introduce children to the act of giving back, helping them understand the value in helping others. This will also give kids a sense of pride and achievement as they share their baking efforts with friends, family, and neighbours.

Happy World Baking Day!
