At the first big panel, Wizards of the Coast debuted new Marvel Vision and Mind Stone cards that are part of Magic: The Gatherings big Universes Beyond initiative, which adds in third-party IP to the popular tabletop trading card game. The company previously released a Spider-Man set and the Marvel Super Heroes set launches on June 28.
MCU star Paul Bettany, who plays The Vision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), took the stage to help unveil the new cards. Bettany also added a Mind Stone gem to a real-life version of the Infinity Gauntlet. The Spider-Man set included the Soul Stone as a chase card with three different versions, and Wizards of the Coast confirmed that Marvel Super Heroes will include the Mind Stone in a similar way.
It was revealed that Vision will appear across multiple cards. In one, Vision, Synthezoid Avenger, he is an artifact creature with flying and the special ability that every time a player casts a spell when its not their turn, Vision can either gain a +1/+1 counter or phase out. Magics head designer Mark Rosewater explains, One of Vision’s powers is that he can change his density so he can make himself very dense, which makes himself extra strong, or he can make himself lose so much density he can actually pass between objects. And when he does that in the comics, they refer to it as phasing. Phasing in Magic is a mechanic that causes a card to temporarily leave the gametreating it as though it doesn’t existbefore returning (phasing in) at the beginning of the owner’s next untap step.
There will also be a rare version of The Vision with flying and vigilance (card does not need to tap when it attacks). This card also has three special abilities from Visions vast power set, one of which can be used every time you cast a noncreature spell. Solar Beam gives him double strike (allows a card to deal combat damage twice in a round). Density Control makes him indestructible (makes a card immune to effects that say “destroy for a round). And Technopathy which lets you draw a card from your deck.
The Mind Stone cards are indestructible white cards that tap to generate one white mana. Additionally for one white and five mana, you can Harness the Mind Stone and activate its infinity ability, exiling up to one target nonland permanent that you control and returning it to the battlefield under its owners control. This will greatly benefit decks built around cards with enter-the-battlefield (ETB) triggers. This is our headliner for this set. Much like the Soul Stone, explained Rosewater.
There are six primary Infinity Stones, and so far one has been part of each Marvel set. Time will tell if we will see the remaining four stones appear in four subsequent sets, but this would appear to be the strategy.
