Retro-inspired lines and a horror classic figure pre-order headline this week's action figures updates.
The action figure world sees a mix of nostalgia-driven releases and horror themes this week. CultureFly and Jazwares both tap into the retro market with new lines that harken back to the ’80s, while Sideshow Collectibles is diving deep into horror with their latest offering.
Retro Appeal: CultureFly’s “VS” Line and Stranger Things Animated Series
CultureFly is reviving the spirit of vintage toy lines with their “VS” series. Transforming iconic characters like Arcee and Soundwave into figures reminiscent of Battle Beasts, complete with rub-reveal stickers, CultureFly is banking on the power of nostalgia. This approach mirrors broader industry trends seen with lines like Funko’s ReAction figures, which have successfully capitalized on retro styles.
Simultaneously, Netflix’s animated “Stranger Things” series has sparked new product lines from Jazwares, starting with their Eleven figure. As “Stranger Things” continues to expand its universe through animation, Jazwares’ approach is to encapsulate the youthful spirit that made the original series a hit. It’s a strategic move to capitalize on the nostalgia of both the series and the ’80s period it evokes.
G.I. Joe Series Continues with Classic Characters
In a detailed review, Hasbro’s latest addition to their G.I. Joe: Classified Series, Destro with the Iron Grenadier Despoiler, revives another classic character. The revamped Despoiler vehicle, now notably larger, reflects Hasbro’s commitment to enhancing the collectibles appeal of their offerings. This continues to maintain the line’s popularity since its relaunch in 2020.
Horror Themes Enter the Scene
The spooky season brings a noticeable shift towards horror-themed releases. Sideshow Collectibles has opened pre-orders for a highly detailed Regan MacNeil figure from “The Exorcist.” This sixth scale figure, complete with interchangeable hands and a floating demon head, targets the high-end collector market at $290. It’s a substantial addition for fans of the classic horror genre.
Lastly, Mattel’s Halloween-themed Hot Wheels series continues with a Dodge Charger Stock Car, another in their affordable seasonal range. While not as intricate as some collector-focused offerings, it adds a fun nod to the holiday with its themed design.
Capcom Classics: A New Look at Captain Commando Figures
52Toys has released fresh images of their Captain Commando and Carol figures from their FigLiteDX line. Inspired by the beloved 1991 Capcom arcade game, these 1/12 scale figures aim to capture the essence of arcade nostalgia for collectors looking to relive the gaming icon’s glory days.
Together, these stories highlight the enduring appetite for retro appeal and collectible horror items among action figure enthusiasts. While innovation is always present in the industry, it’s clear that a nostalgic throwback remains a powerful draw for collectors around the world.
