The introduction of the D.I.R.E. Tech sub-team in G.I. Joe marks a new direction in Hasbro's classic line, blending mysticism with military strategy.
As Halloween rapidly approaches, the action figure scene is quietly busy, with a mix of updates and thematic releases highlighting the season’s spooky allure. Among these, Hasbro’s expansion of the G.I. Joe universe with the D.I.R.E. Tech line stands out as a noteworthy development.
G.I. Joe Embraces the Supernatural with D.I.R.E. Tech
Hasbro has unveiled the latest addition to its G.I. Joe: Classified Series, introducing a new sub-team with a supernatural twist. The release of Night-Creeper (D.I.R.E. Tech) marks the third in this line of figures, incorporating ‘Dread-Inducing Responsive Energy’—a mystical force that adds a fresh narrative layer to the G.I. Joe universe. As reported by Action Figure Barbecue, this energy can trigger fear and create physical constructs, offering a new kind of challenge for the franchise’s Night Force.
This move represents an intriguing deviation from G.I. Joe’s traditional military themes, injecting elements of mysticism and horror. It could attract new audiences while offering long-time fans something unexpected. The impact of this direction, both in sales and in fan reception, will be an interesting development to monitor.
Horror Themes Prevail with Seasonal Releases
In other news, the horror theme continues with Trick or Treat Studios’ line inspired by George A. Romero’s ‘Day of the Dead.’ As highlighted by Action Figure Barbecue, their release of Dr. Tongue—a zombie distinguished by his exposed tongue—brings a cult horror aesthetic to collectors. While not an icon in the wider horror genre, Dr. Tongue’s distinct look has made him a staple in horror-related merchandise.
Little Nightmares’ The Lady Figures Capture Collector Interest
Finally, a report from She’s Fantastic brings attention to the Little Nightmares franchise, particularly with the figure of The Lady. This creepy, elegant character has resonated with collectors, even those unfamiliar with the video game’s lore. Bandai/Namco’s work on translating these digital characters into physical form showcases the ongoing trend of video game partnerships in the toy industry, particularly within the designer toy segment.
Together, these releases highlight the blend of nostalgia, horror, and innovative theming ramping up as Halloween arrives, showcasing a notable mix of familiar names and new concepts within the action figure arena.
