The anticipated Transformers X G.I. Joe crossover film has been shelved, while a new direction emerges for G.I. Joe.
This week has seen a significant shake-up in the cinematic world of action figure adaptations, with the long-discussed Transformers X G.I. Joe crossover movie officially cancelled. As reported by HissTank, the previously touted crossover, which had been in discussion for quite some time, is no longer moving forward. While specific plot details remain concealed, the announcement suggests a clear shift towards reimagining each franchise independently.
In the wake of this cancellation, focus has now turned to the upcoming G.I. Joe movie, directed by Danny McBride. Deadline reports that the film will proceed as a stand-alone G.I. Joe reimagining, distancing itself from the previously planned crossover narrative. Notably, Bradley Cooper has been confirmed to be stepping into the role of Duke, previously portrayed by Channing Tatum. This casting choice adds a fresh layer of interest to the project, which some may see as a strategic attempt to revitalize the G.I. Joe franchise through new, high-profile talent.
Behind the scenes, the production is helmed by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, and Zev Foreman, all experienced in action-oriented cinema. The development signals a deliberate pivot back to standalone storytelling for G.I. Joe, possibly to better align with fans’ expectations of the brand and capitalize on its nostalgic appeal.
Halloween-Themed Retro Figures Resurface
In other action figure news, the Halloween season is spicing up the toy aisles with offerings from Plastic Meatball. Although they’ve been relatively quiet on new releases in recent years, they have returned with multiple exclusives through Fright Rags, as highlighted in Action Figure Barbecue‘s coverage of spooky, seasonal toys. Their latest release, Ghost Bob from John Carpenter’s classic “Halloween,” taps into both the retro nostalgia and seasonal creepiness that many collectors crave around this time of year. This particular line also includes figures like Young Michael Myers and a Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers 2-pack, providing an enticing selection for horror aficionados and action figure collectors alike.
As these events unfold, collectors and enthusiasts have much to consider with the revamped narrative direction for G.I. Joe and the promising re-emergence of nostalgic horror figures during the Halloween season. Whether these moves successfully rejuvenate their respective franchises will be worth watching in the coming months.
